We decided to add the Ameraucana breed to our chickens when we read how nurturing they are. The article stated if you have a bird (or chick) that has been hurt or orphaned you can put them in with the Ameraucanas and this breed will take them into the flock. We have found this to be true.
The Ameraucana is recognized by the American Poultry Association and was standardized in 1984. They are hard to find. Many people will breed an Ameraucana or an Araucanas with other breeds to get Easter Eggers because of the range of colors in the eggs this breeding produces. The standard colors are black, blue, blue-wheaten, brown-red, buff, silver, wheaten and white.
Currently we have the Blue Wheaten Ameraucana. Hank, our head rooster, has promised to keep his girls happy and they will be producing many fertilized light blue eggs. This flock excites us and it is such a treat to watch the new additions.
